Match Mechanics: Format, Fixtures & Season Flow

The Indian Super League (ISL) is designed for fast-paced action and competitive balance, following a structured tournament format that ensures excitement from start to finish.

League Format

The season begins with a round-robin league stage, where each team plays both home and away matches against every other team in the league. This phase tests consistency, strategy, and endurance as clubs battle for a top-six finish to secure playoff qualification.

Season Timing

The ISL runs from October to March, syncing with the global football calendar. This timing allows maximum participation and viewership, coinciding with India’s festive season and school holidays, making it the perfect period for fans to immerse themselves in football.

Player Auctions & Squad Rules

ISL clubs build their squads using a combination of:

  • Domestic signings to promote homegrown talent

  • Foreign player quotas to raise the quality of play

  • Draft picks and transfer deals for tactical flexibility

Each team must include a minimum number of Indian players in their starting XI, which ensures strong local representation and opportunities for national talent to shine.

Playoff Structure

The top six teams advance to the playoffs, keeping the competition alive for more clubs until the very end.

  • 3rd vs 6th and 4th vs 5th place teams face off in single-leg knockout matches.

  • The top two teams from the league phase automatically advance to the semi-finals.

Winners of the semis meet in the Grand Final, where one team is crowned ISL Champion.

Who’s in Charge: The Faces Behind the League

The Indian Super League (ISL) is governed by the All India Football Federation (AIFF) in collaboration with IMG–Reliance and Star Sports, all working toward a common goal, raising the profile of football in India. Their combined efforts manage everything from tournament operations and fixture scheduling to maintaining league standards in line with AFC and FIFA regulations.

Beyond the league structure, this partnership has also prioritised long-term growth. Initiatives like the Hero ISL Youth Leagues have been launched to identify and nurture grassroots talent, creating a pipeline for the next generation of Indian footballers and building a sustainable future for the sport.
